George Antheil (1900-1959) - The Complete Works for String Quartet - Del Sol String Quartet

Opgenomen in Berkeley, California, september 2004

"I first heard a recording of the Quartets 1, 2 and 3 in Holland in 1995. A friend (later my husband) played me the music he had discovered at the public library, and I was immediately fascinated, not being able to place the idiom or language in any one country or style. I heard elements of Stravinsky, Janacek, Kodaly, Debussy, Copland. Who was this? A European? American? As I started to learn more about George Antheil, I discovered that he indeed crossed the Antlantic physically and musically, defying any strict categorization. What remained with me were his haunting melodies and motives... years after losing the recording we had, I still had the themes of the first and the third quartets in my ear. When finally I managed to get hold of a copy of the now out-of-print Mondriaan Quartet recording, the music had the same impact on my colleagues in the Del Sol. We immediately felt an affinity for the music, and got to work researching the sources." (Monica Scott)

"The Del Sol Quartet, which has given the posthumous premiere readings of some of this music, obviously knows and loves these scores inside out, thus providing more incisive and insightful interpretations than the Mondrian Quartet on the earlier disc. Accompanied by a lengthy and well-informed essay by an Italian Antheil specialist, this is an indispensable contribution to the reclamation of our national musical heritage." (Paul A. Snook, Fanfare Magazine)

Voor mij is Antheil niet meer dan een vage naam. In een grijs verleden had ik eens een cassette met vioolsonates. Die cassette is allang zoek. Ik ben blij dat de strijkkwartetten beschikbaar zijn gekomen. Daarvoor mijn hartelijke dank.
